Why we made this

My daughter is five, and she always asks for one more

We tell a story every night. It is the best part of the day, and she asks for more every single time.

Some nights the words run out. After work, dinner and the dishes, I am out of stories before she is out of questions. Some nights it is simply not possible.

So we built BestKids. Not to replace the parent at the bedside, but to make it easy to be there: a good story ready, told well, in our language, in a voice she loves.

Then it grew. The stories our grandparents told are quietly disappearing. Some were never written down. Some were never translated. Some are simply wise, and meant to be told again to every new child. We started collecting them, from everywhere.

PraneethFounder, BestKids. A dad who ran out of stories.

What a story does

Five things a good bedtime story gives a child

  1. 1A happy, settled sleepA story at the same time every night is the strongest bedtime routine there is.
  2. 2A growing brainSleep is when the day’s learning is written into memory.
  3. 3Imagination and wordsA picture, a warm voice and the words to follow: the format a young brain likes best.
  4. 4Good habits, kindly taughtChildren learn honesty from stories that praise honesty, not from stories that punish lying.
  5. 5A better personStories are how children learn that other people have feelings of their own.

Each of these sits next to a study on the research page.

The stories

Gathered from everywhere. Some nearly lost. All meant to be told

Panchatantra and Jataka

India’s oldest teaching tales, written to make princes wise.

Aesop and the fables

The tortoise, the hare, the ant and the grasshopper.

Folk tales of every region

Stories a grandmother told that were never printed.

The world’s bedtime

Anansi, Baba Yaga, Momotaro, the Arabian nights.

Stories of good people

True tales of kindness and courage, chosen for what they praise.

Your family’s own stories

Told by the people who were there, in their own voices.

Retold, not translated. Every language gets the same pages, the same pictures, and the same pause before the ending.

How it is built

Designed for rest, not for attention

Almost everything on a screen is built to hold a child’s eyes. BestKids is built to let them close.

Gentle on the eyes

Dark by default, warm light, big soft type. Nothing flashes.

Calm, not captivating

No feed, no endless scroll, no autoplay into the next thing. Silence ends the night.

A routine, not a reward loop

No badges, no points, no “come back tomorrow”. A story, a wish, a star, lights out.

Grown-ups hold the gate

Anything made for your child is reviewed by a person first. No AI chats with children.

Subtle and clear

Every story carries one idea: be honest, be brave, be kind. It is never a lecture.

A voice they love

Native voices for each language, or a parent’s own voice reading every story.

The last thing a child hears

Each night ends with a few quiet words in the family’s language, the same every night, so they become the child’s own.

  • ✦ I am loved.
  • ✦ I was kind today, and I can be kind tomorrow.
  • ✦ My mind grows while I sleep.
  • ✦ Good night. The story will be here tomorrow.

Our promise

What we will always do, and never do

Always

  • Put the child’s sleep ahead of every other number.
  • Choose stories for what they praise.
  • Retell, not translate, and review each language with someone who grew up in it.
  • Keep the public library free.
  • Keep the screen dim, the type large, and the ending quiet.

Never

  • Show ads or sell attention.
  • Autoplay a child into another story without asking.
  • Add streaks, badges, or anything that rewards watching more.
  • Let an AI chat freely with a child.
  • Use a family’s voice or a child’s data to train anything.
